David Ornstein has provided an interesting take on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s possible contract U-turn.
After seeing their team seal the Premier League title and the contract extension of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool right-back’s future is possibly the next item on the wish-list of many fans.
Despite being curtailed by injuries this season, Alexander-Arnold has been a key contributor to Liverpool’s success.
He has made 41 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, scoring four times and registering eight assists.
His latest goal was against Leicester City, with the Liverpool vice-captain celebrating widely after scoring .
However, as it stands, Alexander-Arnold will not be at Liverpool next season, as his current deal will expire in the summer.
The 26-year-old has been in contract discussions with the club for a long time now, but there appears to be no headway with just days left before his current deal expires.
Rather, it is being reported that he has agreed to a move to Real Madrid?
The Spanish La Liga side is said to have been encouraged to bid by the defender, and his move to the Bernabeu is now a matter of when, not if.
Despite the contrary reports, some recent activities and comments are leading to optimism among Liverpool fans over a potential U-turn by the player.
First, Cody Gakpo revealed that he was hopeful that Alexander-Arnold would follow in the footsteps of Van Dijk and Salah in signing a new contract.
A forensic lip reader also revealed that the conversation between Liverpool owner John Henry and the defender at full time on Sunday was about Alexander-Arnold signing a new deal and making public his decision to the fans.
There was even more buzz among fans when Linda Pizzuti, wife of John Henry, responded to a comment on her post of Alexander-Arnold conversing with the Liverpool owner.
With hopes over a possible U-turn at fever high, trusted journalist David Orsentein has argued why such an occurrence cannot be ruled out.
“It’s long since been the case that we’re expecting him to join Real Madrid, but of course, until absolutely everything is finalised, that door is just slightly ajar,” he said on The Athletic FC Podcast.
Although the phrase “slightly ajar” may not inspire overwhelming confidence, it offers more optimism than Liverpool fans have been afforded for months.
With Salah and Van Dijk committing their futures to the Reds, there remains a genuine, if faint, possibility that Alexander-Arnold could be persuaded to follow their steps.
